Mohammed Shami is on the brink of a historic milestone in ODIs. As of February 8, 2025, Shami has taken 196 wickets in 102 ODIs, placing him just four wickets away from becoming the fastest Indian to reach 200 ODI wickets. If Shami reaches this milestone in his next match against England on 9th February then he will become the second fastest overall to reach this milestone leaving behind great Saqlain Mushtaq’s 104 matches. Currently, this record is held by Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, who achieved this feat in 102 ODIs i.e an astonishing 1.96 wickets per match. The fastest Indian to 200 ODI wickets right now is Ajit Agarkar with reaching this record in 133 ODIs.

Shami also fastest Indian to 100 and 150 ODI wickets
Mohammed Shami also became the fastest Indian to 100 ODI wickets, reaching the milestone in his 56th match in Napier against New Zealand in January 2019. He surpassed the previous record held by Irfan Pathan since 2006. Mohammed Shami is also the fastest Indian and 4th fastest overall to reach 150 ODI wickets in just 80 ODIs.

Shami had a phenomenal ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, where he took 24 wickets in just 7 matches, setting the record for the most wickets by an Indian in a single edition of the tournament. His best performance came in the semi-final against New Zealand on 15 November 2023, where he took 7/57, the best-ever bowling figures in a World Cup semi-final. His 7/57 is also the best ODI bowling figues for an Indian bowler.
During the CWC 2023, Mohammed Shami also became the quickest bowler to take 50 wickets in ICC 50 over Cricket World Cups, achieving the feat in just 17 matches surpassing Mitchell Starc’s 19 matches.
